Rehabilitation of missing or compromised teeth
A Dental Prosthodontist is concerned with the rehabilitation of the mouth by replacing missing or severely damaged teeth. A tooth may become structurally compromised as a result of a large carious lesion, trauma, or periodontal problem; however, this condition is highly unstable and results in general decompensation of the oral cavity with degeneration of occlusion. Early intervention plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of masticatory function.
Operating Procedures
Depending on the clinical situation, there are several procedures that the clinician can implement to rehabilitate the patient's mouth.
Prosthetic crown
It is a laboratory-reproduced tooth with highly aesthetic
and durable materials. It can be cemented onto a natural tooth or screwed onto a dental implant (if an abutment tooth is not present and implant-prosthetic rehabilitation is needed).
Dental Bridge
The dental bridge uses the remaining teeth as supporting pillars for the prosthetic crown of the missing tooth.
Dental inlay
It is a laboratory-produced artifact that faithfully reproduces the missing part of the tooth, which will be definitively cemented in place so that both optimal esthetic and functional performance can be achieved.
Total removable denture
Commonly known as ''dentures,'' these are resin restorations that bridge the total absence of upper and lower teeth. Since there are no supporting teeth, this type of prosthesis takes advantage of the support on the mucous membranes to provide stability during chewing.
Partial removable denture
Also known as Skeletonized Prostheses, they take advantage of the same principle as the above-mentioned Total Mobile Prosthesis but in addition can anchor on residual teeth by means of a metal ''skeleton'' that joins artificial teeth with natural ones.
