What are spoiled habits?
DEntifree day of Pediatric Dentistry
Spoiled habits in pediatric dentistry are behavioral abnormalities typical of childhood (age 4 years and older). If persistent beyond the physiological age limit, they can adversely affect oral development. Following are the 3 main disorders.
Atypical swallowing
Primary swallowing is physiological during the first 3-4 years of life, but if persistent beyond this period it is called atypical swallowing. This spoiled habit prevents the physiological development of teeth and jaw bones, altering the growth of proper dental occlusion and harmonious facial development.
Oral respiration
Oral breathing is a spoiled habit that occurs when the respiratory function is carried out mainly through the mouth. This unphysiological condition can cause adenoid hypertrophy, negatively affecting dental occlusion and proper facial growth and harmony.
Finger suction
The sucking activity represents a physiological and fundamental function for the infant for nutrition and for his or her mental and physical well-being. However, it is necessary for this function to be stopped within first 3 years of life. Persistence of this function will adversely affect the development of the growing dental arches and jaw bones.
